The museum was opened in 2015 to commemorate the 400 year anniversary of Tokugawa Ieyasu’s death. It has an impressive collection of Ieyasu’s personal belongings, including his armour, swords and letters. 

Visitors can reach the Museum by getting the sightseeing bus from Tobu Nikko station to the Shinkyo Bridge bus stop. The bus ride will take approximately 5 minutes. From Shinkyo Bridge, you will enter the start of the Nikko Heritage Area and Toshogu Shrine will take approximately 10 minutes to reach. However, if you want to be dropped off closer you can take the sightseeing bus exclusively for the temples and shrines and get off at the Omotesando bus stop.

The Museum is located right next to Nikko Toshogu shrine, therefore it is very easy for visitors to do both activities back to back. Tickets for the museum cost 600 yen for children and 1,000 yen for adults. If you would like to do both the shrine complex and museum you can buy a combined ticket for both for 2,400 yen.

The museum has a small cinema room where they show an informative bi-lingual film all about the history of nearby Nikko Toshogu Shrine, how it was built and its amazing wooden carvings. The museum also has a wonderful cafe which is the perfect place to relax after a busy day exploring the Nikko Heritage area!
