It is the centre of modern Japan, yet still retains glimpses into its long history and past. Once called ‘Edo’, Tokyo has acted as the capital since the early-17th century and driven Japan away from its feudal past through modernization, the devastation of the mid-20th century and re-emergence as one of the world’s most powerful economies. It offers something for everybody, from the cultured, refined and high-end to the hippest of neighbourhoods, sub-cultures and diverse pop-culture they give birth to. One of the world’s great cities, Tokyo must be experienced to be believed.
