Tea Ceremony in Yanaka Old Tokyo

Tea Ceremony in Yanaka Old Tokyo

Tucked away in the quaint and historic district of Yanaka is Gallery Okubo, a family run tea house and art shop. Opened in 2015, the tea house was created to celebrate the art galleries 100th anniversary. As you step inside, you will be greeted by the old charm of the building, feeling as if you’ve been transported back in time.

The family are extremely kind and professional, and provide a fun and authentic tea ceremony experience to all its customers. You can choose from a basic package of just drinking matcha with wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets), or you can choose the tea ceremony option where you will sit and watch the tea teacher preparing and making your tea and wagashi for you. She will talk you through the process and meaning, providing you with a deeper cultural understanding of this historic practice.

The tea teacher will be wearing Kimono as she carries out the tea ceremony. A highlight of this particular tea ceremony is that you can choose the tea bowl you drink from. As this is also an art gallery, they have a personal collection of many beautiful tea bowls some of which are antique! The oldest dates back to 270 years ago! This makes the experience feel even more special.

Once you have finished your tea ceremony the art gallery will provide you with a drawing and facts relating to your tea bowl, making for a great souvenir of your experience! Please note that you should make a reservation in advance especially if you are in a group. The tea room is quite small and can accommodate approximately 7 people.
