Kawanakajima Battlefield Fireworks Festival
Kawanakajima Battlefield fireworks festival (川中島古戦場まつり) was originally held for the purpose of reposing the souls of those who died in a battle fought over 450 years ago. Between the 16th to 17th century, Japan had decades of internal war. This period is called the Sengoku period (meaning warring states). In this period, the feudal lords fought each other in order to gain sovereignty over Japan, and there were many who lost their lives. The festival venue was the field of battle in Kawanakajima during the Sengoku period. Approximately 3000 fireworks are launched as well as and people float paper lanterns down the river.
Fireworks shows are usually held in summer, but this festival is an unusual one as it is conducted in October. The event lasts until late in the evening, so we would recommend for you to book the hotel in Nagano in advance!
