Obuse is a small but historic town just outside Nagano City, around 30-minutes by train. Famous for its chestnut confectioneries, ‘miso’ and ‘sake’ breweries and the Hokusai-san Museum, Obuse is popular with older Japanese who enjoy its quiet ambience and mix of gardens, temples, shops and restaurants. A good option for a morning or afternoon visit in combination with a visit to the nearby Jigokudani Monkey Park, Obuse also offers a limited amount of accommodation, mostly small family-run guesthouses. If you can’t find what you’re looking for in the area, try nearby Yudanaka and Shibu Onsen or Nagano City – all of which are within easy reach of Obuse using the Nagano Dentetsu Line running from Nagano Station.
