Akechidaira Ropeway
Akechidaira Ropeway and Lookout Observation is a great scenic point which offers panoramic views of Nikko and the stunning natural landscape. Visitors can enjoy taking the Akechidaira Ropeway up to the observation deck. The ride only takes approximately 3 minutes and offers incredible views along the way. From the observation deck, you will be greeted with breathtaking views of Kegon Falls, Mount Nantai and Lake Chuzenji all in one place! Three of Nikko’s most famous landmarks!
Akechidaira opened in 1933, and sits at an altitude of 1,473 meters! It is well worth adding to your Nikko itinerary, especially if you’re staying for two days or more. If you like to spend time outdoors, enjoying nature, then this will be a great attraction for you. To reach Akechidaira from either Tobu Nikko station or JR Nikko station, it will take approximately 40 minutes using the sightseeing bus depending on how busy traffic is. Make sure to use the buses bound for Chuzenji Onsen or Yumoto Onsen, and get off at the Akechidaira bus stop.
At the base of the ropeway, visitors will find a rest area, cafe and souvenir shop selling local goods. For travellers purchasing the ’All Nikko Area Pass’, you will have Akechidaira Ropeway already included, as well as a boat ride across Lake Chuzenji and more.
Please note if the weather is bad, the ropeway may be closed suddenly. It is also worth noting that during Nikko’s peak season in the Autumn, the ropeway hours may be extended to open earlier and close later, but will be very busy due to the popularity of the Autumn leaves. The peak season stretches from October through to mid November. Please ensure to plan ahead and enquire with the staff about any sudden closures or changes to opening hours.
