Kamakura : Komachi Dori

Kamakura

Situated in Kanagawa prefecture, just 100 minutes out of Tokyo, is Kamakura. To reach Kamakura from Tokyo, take a train from Shinjuku station to Fujisawa station, and then catch the local ’Enoden’ train to Kamakura station. Komachi Dori is the main shopping street of Kamakura, and is filled with amazing street food vendors, cafes and shops selling local crafts. It is just a three minute walk from Kamakura station, so makes for a perfect first stop or lunch break location as you explore the city! The entrance is marked by a large red Torii gate so it is very easy to spot!

Komachi Dori runs for around 350 meters, and there are also beautiful side streets running off the main street which are worth exploring! Approximately 18 million people visit this street each year, so ot does get busy! If you want to beat the crowds, it is worth making Komachi Dori your first stop in the morning before the afternoon rush. Komachi Dori started as a modest market street centuries ago, which was frequented by locals and pilgrims heading to the Hachimangu shrine and other temples in the city. So it has a long history and you can appreciate how popular it was even all those centuries ago.

The local dish of Kamakura is Shirasu, a small whitebait fish that is usually enjoyed on top a bowl of rice! However, people have become very creative with Shirasu which you can also enjoy with noodles, raw or on top of pizza. There are many restaurants and cafes that offer this dish if you want to try! However, Komachi Dori is packed with a wide variety of street foods to try! From sweet to savoury, there is a lot of eat here. Try matcha crepes or sweet Dango rice dumplings, or local curry to wagyu beef! You will leave feeling satisfied and full!

For those wanting to indulge in some retail therapy, Komachi Dori is packed with local shops selling local crafts and regional specialities, as well as more standard souvenirs that can be found throughout Japan. From folding fans to incense, teas to kimono, you can find all the traditional souvenirs you are looking for. We highly recommend taking some time to browse and explore.
