Kamakura : Enoshima Island and Enoshima Sea Candle

Kamakura : Enoshima Island and Enoshima Sea Candle

Situated in Kanagawa prefecture, just 100 minutes out of Tokyo, is Kamakura and Enoshima. To reach Enoshima from Tokyo, take a train from Shinjuku station to Fujisawa station, and then either catch the local ’Enoden’ train to Enoshima station, or take the Odakyu Line train to Katase Enoshima station. The walk to Enoshima Island is then approximately a 10 – 15 minute walk depending on which station you arrive at. If you’re very lucky, you will be able to see Mount Fuji on clear days as you walk across the bridge to the island. We highly recommend walking across for sunset and dusk where the colours and silhouette of Fuji is a beautiful combination.

Enoshima is an island famous for its Shrine founded in 552. The shrine is dedicated to the Buddhist goddess called Benten. She is known for good fortune, wealth and music. So she is often depicted holding a lute. Her temples are also almost always placed near water and so Enoshima is the perfect place for her to be enshrined. She is believed to have created Enoshima after subduing a five headed dragon which was attacking the area!

Enoshima

As well as the shrine, Enoshima is also home to a number of other attractions. Visitors can easily spend one day or more exploring. Enoshima is famous for its hot springs or onsen. The island has a few hotels where visitors can stay, enjoy soaking in the relaxing waters of the hot spring with spectacular views of the ocean and even Mount Fuji on clear days. If you have time, we highly recommend spending one night on the island. There are plenty of restaurants on the island to keep you well fed, as well as small local shops selling great souvenirs and snacks.

Enoshima Island has a beautiful English style garden, aquarium and the Sea Candle light house and observatory to also keep you entertained! There are also caves you can visit which have tidal pools and sacred Buddhist statues inside. We highly recommend visiting the Sea Candle light house and observatory as a top activity to do. You can buy tickets to the Sea Candle at the bottom of the island at the ticket booth, or at the top of the island at the ticket booth. You can take an elevator to the top of the observatory where there is both an indoor and outdoor observation deck. The outdoor deck offers panoramic views of the ocean, Kamakura as well as an expansive view of Japan! You can even see Tokyo and the Tokyo Skytree from the Sea Candle! There is seating all around the outdoor deck, so visitors can sit and relax as they gaze out at the view. Watching the sunset at the top of the Sea Candle is very special, and makes for great photography opportunities.

For those not wanting to climb the stairs to the top of the island, you can buy Enoshima Escalator tickets which includes admission to escalators that will take you to the very top of the island. Please note that there are no escalators to go back down, so visitors will need to use the steps on their return journey. You can even combine escalator tickets with other attractions. For example, you can purchase both the escalators ticket with a Sea Candle ticket for 700 yen. Please note that Enoshima and the Sea Candle are very popular during National Holidays, so please plan ahead of time. The Sea Candle is open everyday from 9am – 8pm, but many of the other attractions have various opening hours.
