Kamakura : Engakuji Temple
Situated in Kanagawa prefecture, just 100 minutes out of Tokyo, is Kamakura. To reach Kamakura from Tokyo, take a train from Shinjuku station to Fujisawa station, and then catch the local ’Enoden’ train to Kamakura station. However to reach Engakuji Temple, visitors can take the train from Kamakura station to Kita-Kamakura station for 3 minutes using the JR Yokosuka Line. Engakuji Temple is then only a 2 minute walk making it extremely accessible for all travellers.
Engakuji Temple is a Zen temple, and one of the most significant in all of Japan. It was founded in 1282 by a Monk called Mugaku Sogen. The temple belongs to the Rinzai Zen sect of Buddhism, and is listed as one of five Great Zen Temples in Kamakura. The temple has expansive and beautiful grounds which are home to a number of impressive and traditional features. Scenic paths, nature and Zen architecture create a peaceful and beautiful atmosphere. Highlights include the Sanmon Gate, an elaborate entrance to the temple, and Shariden, a designated National Treasure that enshrines a relic of the Buddha. Visitors can also see the Great Bell known as ’Ogane’. It is one of the largest temple bells in all of Japan, and was created in the 13th Century and designated as an Important Cultural Property.
One of the stand out activities that visitors can enjoy at Engakuji Temple are the Zen meditation sessions they offer which are open to the public. They offer a unique and rare opportunity to experience Zen practice firsthand in the beautiful surrounds of a temple. As with many of the temples and shrines in the Kamakura area, the grounds are particularly stunning during the Autumn season when pops of red, gold and orange light up the area.
