Kamakura : Yuigahama Beach and Zaimokuza Beach
Situated in Kanagawa prefecture, just 100 minutes out of Tokyo, is Kamakura. To reach Kamakura from Tokyo, take a train from Shinjuku station to Fujisawa station, and then catch the local ’Enoden’ train to Kamakura station. However to reach Yuigahama and Zaimokuza beaches, you will need to take the ‘Enoden’ train to Yuigahama station for approximately 3 minutes, from there Yuigahama is a 5 minute walk and Zaimokuza is a 10 minute walk.
Both beaches are very popular and sit adjacent to one another making it very easy to visit both during the same trip. They are also well connected to other major attractions in the area by either walking or using the ’Enoden’ train. They form part of the wider coastline in Kanagawa prefecture, and are beautifully scenic and relaxing. You can enjoy fantastic views of Sagami Bay from both beaches, making them a favourite Summer destination for many locals and tourists, especially for those wanting to escape the intense heat and humidity.
Yuigahama Beach is closer to the centre of Kamakura. It has a very fun and lively atmosphere, where visitors can enjoy seasonal beach huts, cafes, bars and water sports. Surfing and paddle boarding are the two most popular sports to take part in, and you can rent equipment at various nearby locations. Of course, the beach is most popular in the summer time, and if you’re lucky you can experience some of the many beach and summer festivals that take place with traditional music, dancing and people wearing Yukata. The views of the sunset is also breathtaking and worth travelling to experience.
Zaimokuza Beach is a little further away, but just a short walk from Yuigahama. It is therefore a but quieter and has a more laid back atmosphere. It is therefore more popular with families and those seeking more peace. Zaimokuza was once Kamakura’s major port area and therefore has a strong connection with the maritime history of Japan.
