Cormorant fishing on the Uji River

Cormorant fishing on the Uji River, known as Uji-gawa Ukai, is a traditional summer event in Uji with over a thousand years of history. This ancient fishing method uses trained cormorants, controlled by skilled masters dressed in period costumes, to catch fish at night under the flickering light of bonfires. The spectacle is both culturally significant and visually stunning, offering visitors a glimpse into Japan’s Heian-era heritage.
