Odawara : Odawara Kankokoryu Centre
Situated in Kanagawa prefecture, just an hour out of Tokyo, is Odawara. To reach Odawara from Tokyo, take a train from Shinjuku station for either 80 minutes or 100 minutes depending on the service you choose . The city has the nickname ’Castle Town’ and it is clear to see why! Odawara is home to a famous Japanese castle with a rich history and traditional architecture. Due to Odawara being a military and political stronghold, and due to its location the area quickly became a hotspot for local crafts and the development of a rich traditional heritage. To celebrate this long history culture Odawara City opened Odawara Kano-Koryu Centre in 2021, a fantastic community hub that has a cafe, hosts various events and where you can try your hand at different crafts! The centre is approximately 15 minutes walk from Odawara train station, and it is located directly opposite Odawara Castle making for a convenient stop during your trip!
The centre has an incredibly friendly and inviting atmosphere! We highly recommend stopping by during your Odawara trip to gain a deeper connection to Odawara’s heritage. The workshop is located on the far side of the building on the ground floor. The great news is that is you’re solo or a small group you will not have to make a reservation to do any of the craft workshops they offer, just ensure that you have left yourself enough time to comfortably enjoy them. You will need anywhere from 30 minutes to 80 minutes depending on what craft you choose.
For adults, we recommend trying the Yosegi wooden coaster making or the Chochin lantern making workshops! Both of these are traditional crafts founded in Kanagawa prefecture where Odawara is located. Chochin making is especially famous in Odawara due to its close proximity to the old Tokaido road and the mountains where travellers and pilgrims used to pass through needing a source of light for their long journeys! For children, we recommend the plastic food replica making or the Hinoki ball decorating! No matter your age, the centre has something suitable for you. If you’re hungry or thirsty after your workshop, stop by their cafe for some great food and drink options.
