Situated in Kanagawa prefecture, just an hour out of Tokyo, is Odawara. To reach Odawara from Tokyo, take a train from Shinjuku station for either 80 minutes or 100 minutes depending on the service you choose . The city has the nickname ’Castle Town’ and it is clear to see why! Odawara is home to a famous Japanese castle with a rich history and traditional architecture. Due to the Odawara’s rich culture and Samurai heritage, Minaka Odawara was created to celebrate the past with nods to the Edo period and traditional Japan.

We highly recommend visiting here for lunch, or as a final stop before you depart Odawara to have a delicious dinner, and buy some local crafts and souvenirs. The great news is that Odawara Minaka is located directly opposite Odawara train station, so it is very easy to find and means you will have a very short walk to catch your train.

There are many high quality shops selling snacks, foods and crafts unique to the Kanagawa area and Odawara. The complex has both restaurants where you can sit inside to dine, or they have many street food style vendors which can be enjoyed in their outdoor courtyard area. Behind the traditional style complex is also a new modern building boasting even more dining options, shops and even onsen! On the very top of the building visitors can find a free foot bath with water sourced from nearby Hakone! This is a great traditional activity to try and a wonderful final stop to relax and take in the impressive panoramic views of Odawara, Kanagawa and the sea before leaving the city.
