Yokohama: Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse
Situated in Kanagawa prefecture, just under 40 minutes from Tokyo, is Yokohama. To reach Yokohama from Tokyo, take a train from Shinjuku station for 35 minutes using the JR Shonan Shinjuku line. For most people visiting Japan they often explore the city of Tokyo. However, as Japan’s second largest city, the picturesque port city of Yokohama is a perfect alternative and day trip from Tokyo. Yokohama is a city rich in history and urban flare, and has the perfect blend of modern and traditional elements with its open waterfronts, historical architecture and urbanised development offering visitors a fun and cosmopolitan atmosphere. Complimenting this great atmosphere is the iconic landmark of the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse!
A perfect example of Yokohama’s modernisation and influence from Western design, the Red Brick Warehouse can make you feel like you’re wandering around Europe or Brooklyn, NY rather than a city in Japan! The warehouse was built between 1911 and 1913 to act as a customs building for the busy Yokohama port, and was modelled off the popular 20th Century European Industrial style of the time. The warehouse has undergone major restoration works, and was officially repurposed as the complex you see today in the early 2000s reopening by 2002.
Today, the Warehouse is a combination of retail, dining, and cultural activities. The complex boasts a fantastic choice of boutique shops, cosy cafes and fashionable restaurants making it a perfect lunch or dinner spot, or even just for a quick coffee! There is an event hall and exhibition space showcasing the history of the Warehouse as well as special limited events. The Warehouse is extremely famous for its seasonal events which are often held outside in the large courtyard. The most famous being the annual Christmas markets and Oktoberfest event, as well as outdoor cinema screenings and street food. The views of the port from the Red Brick Warehouse are lovely, and going for a leisurely walk around the complex is a great experience. To reach the Red Brick Warehouse take the train from Yokohama station to Bashamichi station and walk for approximately 6 minutes.
