Yokohama : Yokohama Yamashita Park and Osanbashi Terminal
Situated in Kanagawa prefecture, just under 40 minutes from Tokyo, is Yokohama. To reach Yokohama from Tokyo, take a train from Shinjuku station for 35 minutes using the JR Shonan Shinjuku line. For most people visiting Japan they often explore the city of Tokyo. However, as Japan’s second largest city, the picturesque port city of Yokohama is a perfect alternative and day trip from Tokyo. Yokohama is a city rich in history and urban flare, and has the perfect blend of modern and traditional elements with its open waterfronts, historical architecture and urbanised development offering visitors a fun and cosmopolitan atmosphere. Complimenting this great atmosphere is the fantastic area of Yamashita Park and the Osanbashi Terminal.
Both Yamashita Park and Osanbashi are located right next to each other, making them both extremely easy to visit on your Yokohama trip. Yamashita Park is a highly popular and beloved park right on the waterfront of the port and harbour. Yamashita Park was opened in 1930 and it was the first urban seaside park in Japan. The park spans 750 meters along the beautiful waterfront and features open lawns, flower gardens, pathways and monuments. The park overlooks the iconic landmark of the Hikawa Maru, an historic retired ocean liner that is permanently docked at the park. It is now a museum that visitors can explore and enjoy. Yamashita is particularly popular during the warmer months when flower festivals are held, and during the Winter when stunning winter illuminations are on display.
Osanbashi Terminal is a popular and iconic landmark on the harbour and port front. The terminal serves as the main port for international cruise ships and luxury liners. The terminal originally opened in 1894 making it one of the oldest port terminals in Japan. The structure you see today was completed in 2002 which replaced the older terminal with a more modern and fit for purpose design to meet international standards. The new design has a minimal and futuristic design, and so fans of this style of architecture will love visiting it. The most notable feature of the terminal is that visitors can enjoy a public space where you can walk along the top of the building which now has a large walkway and seating offering stunning views overlooking the city of Yokohama and the ocean. On clear days, you can even see Mount Fuji from this observation point! To reach both Yamashita Park and Osanbashi Terminal, you can take a train from Yokohama station to Motomachi- Chukagai station using the Minato Mirai Line.
