Clark was a prominent American educator and agricultural scientist who is particularly well-known in Japan for his role in establishing the Sapporo Agricultural College (now Hokkaido University) in 1876. He was invited by the Japanese government during the Meiji Restoration to help modernize education and agriculture in the country.
