One of Central Japan’s most dramatic hot spring areas, Manza Onsen is a small but unique onsen town located high in the Joshinetsu Kogen National Park. Drawing its waters from nearby Mt Kusatsu-Shirane – an active volcano – the hot springs of Manza are known for their acidic water and strong sulfuric smell. Given these properties, the water is said to provide health benefits including improved blood circulation and metabolism.

Surrounding Manza Onsen, walking trails lead further into the national park and through a beautiful landscape. The town itself is small but spread-out with no major centre. When coupled with the acidic and sulfuric character of its water, Manza might not be for everyone.
