Sitting beneath the imposing jagged peaks of Mt Myogi, Myogi Shrine is a stunning yet relatively unknown shrine and temple complex of the outskirts of Tomioka City. Said to have been established in 537, the complex underwent significant development during the Edo Period (1603-1868). The main shrine is elaborately decorated in the black lacquered ‘Gongen-zukuri’, as seen as the famous shrines of Nikko.

While Myogi Shrine is known to many Japanese, it does not attract the crowds of Nikko making it an enjoyable and peaceful place to visit. Structures including the gates and main shrines are designated Important Cultural Property’ with an onsite museum displays relics and important artefacts from the shrines.

Open daily from 09:00 to 17:00. Admission to the shrine complex is free. Entry to the museum costs JPY200.
