Toyama Castle Ruin Park in Toyama City is a historical destination built on the former site of Toyama Castle, once home to feudal lords. The park features a reconstructed castle keep (housing the Toyama Municipal Folk Museum), a beautiful Japanese garden, and remaining original stone walls and moats.
Where is Toyama Castle?

Toyama Castle is located in Toyama City in the Hokuriku region of Japan. The castle, and its reconstructed keep, stands at the center of modern Toyama City, surrounded by the city hall, shopping areas and the Matsugawa river.
A Short History

Dating to around 1543, Toyama Castle was initially built by the Jinbō clan, during the tumultuous Warring States period. It frequently changed hands between powerful feudal lords like the Uesugi clan and Oda Nobunaga's vassal Sassa Narimasa. Narimasa significantly expanded the castle, adding moats and towers and transforming marshlands into fertile paddies. However, after a falling out with Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the castle was besieged and granted to the Maeda clan who would be based in Kanazawa.
Under the Maeda clan during the Edo Period, Toyama Castle served as the wealthy Maeda family's branch base, despite suffering damage from fires and earthquakes. The castle keep was ultimately dismantled in 1871 during the Meiji Restoration. Today, a 1954 ferro-concrete reconstruction houses the Toyama Municipal Folk Museum, preserving its history alongside remaining original stone walls and moats. There is also a museum on the grounds that focuses on tea.
What to do at the Toyama Castle Park?

Visitors to the castle can explore the reconstructed keep, which houses the Toyama Municipal Folk Museum, detailing the castle's 400-year history and offering an observation deck for city views. Within the spacious grounds, you'll find a beautiful Japanese garden with pathways around a pond, perfect for a leisurely stroll, and during spring, it becomes a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing, with the nearby Matsukawa River also adorned with cherry trees. Additionally, the Sato Memorial Art Museum on the park grounds showcases a rich collection of Eastern classical art, including traditional Japanese tea rooms where visitors can experience tea culture. For a unique historical immersion, try a Samurai Armor Experience, allowing you to dress in authentic armor and take photos with the castle as a backdrop, sometimes even involving horses.
