Visitors to Toyama will be struck by the impressive sight of the Tateyama Mountains running across the horizon. Located at the northern of the Hida Mountain Range – often referred to as the North Japan Alps – this is Japan’s tallest mountain range and a striking backdrop to the city. Many people do love exploring the mountains through Kurobe-Tateyama Alpine Route, the splendor of the range can be enjoyed from the comfort of the city as well!

These are our recommendations of where to view the mountains:

1 / Toyama City Hall Observation Tower

This is the most convenient point to get a great view of the mountains. Hours very slightly but the tower is usually open from 09:00 to 21:00 (weekdays) and 10:00 to 21:00 (weekends/public holidays) from April until October. From November to March, the tower is open 09:00 to 18:00 (weekdays) and 10:00 to 18:00 weekends/public holidays). It is in the middle of the central city so you can easily see Toyama Castle, the Ikedaya Yasubei Traditional Medicine Shop, the Glass Museum and many other interesting places.

2 / Kurehayama Park Observatory/Park

Kurehayama Park is located 10 to 15 minutes drive to the west to Toyama Station, the observation deck offers outstanding views of the mountains to the east and Toyama Bay to the north. It is accessible at all times of the day. The best time to see the view of the mountains is January until May, when the snow is its deepest. In this area is also the Toyama Prefectural Suiboku Museum, a museum focused on the black ink painting style.

3 / Amaharashi Coast

The rugged coast of Toyama Bay is famous for its views of the sea set against the mountains. This area has been famous for its beauty for over a thousand years and is mentioned in the Man’yoshi, the oldest poetry anthology in Japan. To access the Amaharashi Coast, take the JR Himi Line from Takaoka Station, disembark at Amaharashi Station and walk 5 minutes to reach the coast. It is accessible all times of the day. You can in theory see it in any season but the best time to see it is in winter. There are more clear days and the snow on the mountains is at its greatest extent.
