Kiyotsu Gorge inc. Tunnel of Light
Known as ‘Kiyotsukyo’ in Japanese, Kiyotsu Gorge is known for its unique rock formations created by a volcanic eruption around 16 million years ago. Today, the Kiyotsu River runs through the gorge, further eroding it and creating a place of special beauty. Often cited as one of Japan’s most beautiful gorges, Kiyotsukyo is known for its seasonal beauty, from the snow of winter to the lush green of summer and mosaic of colour through autumn.
A 750 metre tunnel provides access to the gorge at all times of year. In 2018, the tunnel was updated for Echigo-Tsumari Art Field festival with installations and lighting created by Ma Yansong and MAD Architects.
The blend of lighting and contemporary artwork with the industrial and austere character of the tunnel, leading to views of the beautiful natural landscape outside, creates a surreal and highly enjoyable atmosphere. The tunnel itself is completely level and easy to walk, taking most visitors around 60 minutes to walk the length and back to the entrance.
Refreshingly cool in summer and freezing in winter, make sure to take something to keep you warm.
