Nestled just outside of Nagoya, Mt. Gozaisho is an extraordinary destination that offers not only stunning natural beauty but also a fascinating adventure for nature lovers and thrill-seekers alike. With an elevation of 1,212 meters (3,976 feet), the mountain stands proudly within the Suzuka Mountain Range, offering awe-inspiring views and unique rock formations.

The best way to scale this picturesque mountain is the Gozaisho Ropeway, a 15-minute ride that carries visitors through the sky, offering sweeping vistas of the surrounding landscapes. The 2,161-meter-long ropeway takes riders on a vertical ascent of 780 meters, climbing through varying altitudes while presenting breathtaking panoramic views. On a clear day, visitors can see across Nagoya City and Ise Bay, with the Japanese Alps stretching out in the distance. Aboard the gondola, look out for one of the mountain’s signature features: unusual rock formations, such as the famous square stone balanced precariously on two pillars, which resembles the Buddhist guardian deity Jizo—a symbol of protection, especially for children.

Upon arriving at the summit, you’ll find yourself in Summit Park, a lush, expansive area offering something for everyone. Well-paved walking paths provide easy access to scenic hikes, allowing you to explore the mountain at your own pace.
For those in search of unparalleled views, the three observatories atop Mt. Gozaisho are a must-visit. Each offers a different angle of the stunning scenery, and if you’re lucky enough to visit on a crystal-clear day, you may even catch a glimpse of the distant Mt. Fuji.

The summit is also home to a gift shop and a restaurant, where you can savor the regional specialty, Gozaisho curry udon, a dish unique to the area. The mixture of rich flavors, accompanied by the cool mountain air, makes for a delightful culinary experience.
A Mountain for All Seasons
Mt. Gozaisho is a year-round destination that transforms with the seasons. In spring, the mountain comes alive as azaleas bloom. By late March to mid-May, fresh green leaves appear, spreading from the base up to the summit. As summer rolls in, the temperature remains cool, averaging 20°C to 21°C (68°F to 69.8°F), a stark contrast to the sweltering heat in the cities below. The fall months—mid-October through late November—transform the mountain into a stunning palette of red, yellow, and brown as the leaves change, while winter blankets the mountain in snow, and the trees become covered in frosty layers, creating a picturesque winter wonderland.

Whether you're looking to hike, take in scenic views, or simply relax amidst nature, Mt. Gozaisho and the Gozaisho Ropeway provide an unforgettable escape just a short trip from Nagoya.
