Hiroshima: Miyajima Area
Lying to the south of the central city in Hiroshima Bay, Miyajima is one of the region’s most popular destinations for both Japanese and international visitors. The island is easy to reach from Hiroshima Station and other destinations in the central city, with trains running to the ferry pier, from where it’s a 10 minute ferry ride onto Miyajima – and a total journey of around 50 to 60 minutes from Hiroshima Station.
On the island you’ll find a good range of accommodation, most of which is within easy walking distance of the ferry dock. Options include mid-size to large hotels, high-end ‘ryokan’ (traditional guesthouses) along with family-run ‘minshuku’ (basic guesthouses) and budget options. Busy during the day, staying on Miyajima is a great way to enjoy it at night and in the morning without the crowds of large tour groups.
