Kyoto National Museum
Located across from Sanjusangendo, Kyoto National Museum is one of Japan’s most distinguished institutions. Established in 1897, the museum displays are wide variety of collections and artifacts through both permanent and special exhibitions with many important cultural properties including sculptures, ceramics, calligraphy, paintings, and archaeological artifacts housed within the museum.
It is considered one of Japan’s preeminent cultural institutions along with Tokyo National Museum, and should not be overlooked when deciding which attractions you’ll visit while in Kyoto. Special exhibitions are held on a regular basis, with the theme to each varying widely. Open daily – other than Mondays and over the New Year period – from 09:30 to 17:00.

A visit to Kyoto National Museum can be easily combined with visits to Sanjusangendo, Kiyomizudera, Highashiyama, Yasaka Shrine and / or Gion. Make sure to allow at least a couple of hours at the museum which is especially enjoyable in summer when its cool interior offers refuge from the heat, humidity and crowds of the temples.
