13 to 14 million years ago a volcanic eruption in the area, combined with the slow and steady erosion of the surrounding earth, led to these unique rock formations. Early humans used these rocks and caves as their home during migratory period when they came fishing. During the Edo period a port grew up in the area and in the mid-1800s a gun battery was built to protect the coast. That didn't last very long but in more modern times the prefectural aquarium was constructed. The government also constructed pathways to walk through the area so you can truly experience the amazing sight for yourself.
