Former Hokkaido Government Office Building
The Former Hokkaido Government Office Building symbolized Hokkaido’s modernization and development during the Meiji period (1868–1912), when the Japanese government aimed to develop and populate the island of Hokkaido. It housed the Hokkaido Government until 1968, when operations were moved to a modern facility. After its government functions ceased, the building was designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 1969. During its use, it hosted critical administrative and political activities related to Hokkaido’s development and integration into Japan. Over the many years, it has undergone extensive renovations, to restore its historic charm and now serves as a museum and tourist information center. (NOTE: closed for renovation until July 25 2025.)
Exhibits include documents, maps, and artifacts related to Hokkaido’s history. Its surrounding Akarenga Terrace is a popular spot for locals and tourists, especially for its seasonal flower displays. The octagonal dome represents the ideal of independence and autonomy. The interior retains its historical character, with elegant woodwork, spacious halls, and vintage furnishings. Most certainly, The Old Government Building remains one of Sapporo’s most iconic and picturesque landmarks, reflecting the city’s history and cultural heritage.
