Hakone Ashinoko Narukawa Art Museum

Located right next to the beautiful and popular Lake Ashinoko, Hakone Ashinoko Narukawa Art Museum is a convenient place to spend a few hours enjoying contemporary Japanese art, refreshments and stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

Hakone

To reach the museum, visitors arriving at Hakone station should take the Hakone Tozan Sightseeing bus to the Motohakone bus stop. The journey will take approximately 35 minutes depending on traffic and how busy the bus is. The Museum is open all week from 9am – 5pm.

The museum opened to the public in 1998. It is a private museum with an extensive collection of over 4,000 pieces of contemporary art from Japanese artists across the country. The artworks have been collected over a period of 20 years by the owner and founder of the museum, Minoru Narakawa whos passion for post-WW2 art drove them to start their collection. The Museum celebrates the concept of modern ’Nihonga’ – Japanese style paintings of which you can see many examples across the two floors of the museum.

After enjoying the artworks, visitors can head to the relaxing and modern cafe and panoramic lounge. The cafe provides a wide variety of hot and cold dishes, sweets and drinks. We recommend trying the Japanese Matcha and Wagashi (Traditional Japanese sweets) set to truly feel the atmosphere and culture of Japan. We also recommend trying the Fuji beer! A fun experience, this beer is coloured blue and is served in a Fuji shaped glass!

The panoramic lounge provides visitors with comfortable seating and tables where you can sit and relax for as long as you want while enjoying the amazing views of Lake Ashinoko. From the lounge, you can see the Pirate ship cruise passing by, the famous red Torii gate of Hakone Shrine, and if you’re lucky you may even see Mount Fuji! We truly believe this offers some of the best views in Hakone!
