Hamarikyu Gardens
One of the most beautiful and traditional gardens in Tokyo, Hamarikyu is a must visit if you want to feel close to nature during your trip to Tokyo. You will quickly forgot you are in the centre of the world’s most populated city once you enter the tranquil and green space of this Edo period garden which opened to the public in 1946.
Hamarikyu was once a residence of the Tokugawa family during the 17th Century, Japan’s most famous Samurai and Shogunate family. Used by the family for relaxing, duck hunting and falconry, the gardens have been preserved to showcase its beauty and history. At the end of the Edo period, the garden became property of the Imperial Household where many important foreign dignitaries and royalty were hosted. Walk around the garden and enjoy the traditional landscape, flowers, bridges and replicas of historic structures from the Edo period.
The garden was unfortunately heavily damaged during the WW2 air raids, but over the decades local craftsman and professionals have reconstructed the garden to its former glory and it is no less impressive! Now, the gardens surrounding landscape has change a lot, with skyscrapers towering around the pocket of greenery. This makes for some great photography opportunities where you can see old and new together, a true symbol of Tokyo.
You can also enjoy a matcha and wagashi (traditional Japanese sweet) set at the garden’s resident teahouse located in the heart of the garden overlooking the beautiful pond. Sip matcha in a traditional teahouse setting as you look out across the stunning landscape. You will feel like you’re back in time in old Japan.
