The Hill of The Buddha is a serene, large-scale architectural and landscape installation located at the Makomanai Takino Cemetery in Sapporo, Japan. Completed in 2016, it was designed by renowned architect Tadao Ando. The hill features a giant stone statue of Buddha which is partially hidden within a hill covered with lavender plants.

The 44-foot tall Buddha statue was initially a stand-alone feature at the Takino Cemetery. Ando transformed the space by creating a dome-like hill around the statue. The concept for The Hill of the Buddha emerged in the early 2000s. A monumental 13.5 meter (44 foot) Buddha statue, sculpted from stone was created. Architect Ando envisioned a hill that would encapsulate the Buddha symbolizing protection, introspection, and unity with nature. His design places the statue within a large, circular hill covered in lavender plants, creating a seasonal transformation. In late summer, the lavender blooms a vibrant purple, and in winter, it becomes a quiet snow-covered landscape. The design gives the impression that the Buddha is “birthed” from the earth, symbolizing rebirth and enlightenment. Since its completion, The Hill of the Buddha has become a notable example of contemporary sacred architecture and has drawn visitors from around the world.

Features: Besides the Giant Buddha, visitors are greeted by giant Moai statues when entering Takino Cemetery. These Moai statues symbolize protection and are serving as guardians to those buried there. Walk along the row of Moai statues and touch their rugged stone features. As you walk along the Moai statues, a short distance away, you can just barely see the head of the Buddha poking out from the hill. Some of the best views of the buddha are from near the Moai statues, and tour members are encouraged to take pictures.

The Hill of the Buddha enclosure is a 135 meter walkway that will eventually lead visitors to a kind of water garden. You will walk around this water garden. This water garden is supposed to be a sacred boundary preventing one from making a straight and direct approach/entry to the buddha. Thus a “walk around” approach is necessary. Then visitors will pass an arched concrete tunnel. At the end of the tunnel, the obvious! There in all of its glory sits the Buddha statue, at the center of an open rotunda allowing sunlight to come in. Tour members can sign a “guest book” as well as receive an “omikuji”(written fortune slip) and “omamori” (Japanese good luck charms) if they so choose(small fees apply).
