Hokkaido Shrine

The Hokkaido Shrine, located in Maruyama Park in Sapporo, Hokkaido, is one of the most significant Shinto shrines in northern Japan. It is dedicated to the deities of Hokkaido, including the spirits of the first governor of Hokkaido, Kuroda Kan’bei, as well as the deities of nature and the island’s indigenous people. The shrine is known for its rich history, scenic location, and cultural significance, drawing both locals and tourists year-round.

The shrine was founded in 1869, shortly after Hokkaido was opened up to settlement by the Japanese government. The shrine is dedicated to Kami, or Shinto deities, particularly the spirits of influential figures in Hokkaido’s history and the natural environment. It was initially built to honor the deities of the Ainu people, the indigenous population of Hokkaido, and was later expanded with the addition of other prominent figures from Hokkaido’s early history.

Visitors to Hokkaido Shrine are able to approach the main hall, where they can make a traditional prayer. To do this, visitors typically offer a small donation in the wooden box in front of the hall, bow twice, clap their hands twice, make a silent wish or prayer, and bow once again. In addition, visitors will be overwhelmed during the cherry blossom season (late April to early May). The park has scenic walking paths and is ideal for picnics and enjoying nature. In autumn, the park is also known for its vibrant fall colors, making it a wonderful time for photographers and nature lovers to visit.

The highlight for most visitors is to purchase an omamori (protective amulets) and omikuji (fortune slips) at the shrine. Omamori are believed to provide protection and blessings for various aspects of life such as health, love, and success, while omikuji provide a fortune that can guide you for the year ahead.
