Situated in Kanagawa prefecture, just 100 minutes out of Tokyo, is Kamakura. To reach Kamakura from Tokyo, take a train from Shinjuku station to Fujisawa station, and then catch the local ’Enoden’ train to Kamakura station. However, to reach Hase Dera Temple, take the local ’Enoden’ train to Hase station! The temple is then approximately a 5 minute walk from the station. The temple is only a three minute walk from Kotokuin Temple and the Great Buddha, so it is highly recommend you combine both temples if you have time during your visit.

Hase Dera is a beautiful and historically significant Buddhist Temple famous for its amazing statues and views overlooking all of Kamakura and Sagami Bay. The temple was originally founded in the 8th Century and it is dedicated to the Buddhist Goddess Kannon, who represents compassion and mercy. The temple is home to an eleven faced statue of Kannon that stands over nine meters tall. Many pilgrims come here to worship and pay their respects to her.

The temple grounds are large, and visitors can easily spend over one hour exploring here. The grounds has a lot of traditional architecture, seasonal flowers, moss stone paths, statues and a beautiful Koi pond. The temple is very popular during Hydrangea season in June when vivid pops of pinks, blues and purples brighten the area. The temple is also home to a famous cave which houses statues of Benten, the Goddess of Music and Wealth.
