Kamakura : Kenchoji Temple

Situated in Kanagawa prefecture, just 100 minutes out of Tokyo, is Kamakura. To reach Kamakura from Tokyo, take a train from Shinjuku station to Fujisawa station, and then catch the local ’Enoden’ train to Kamakura station. However to reach Kenchoji Temple, visitors can take the train from Kamakura station to Kita-Kamakura station for 3 minutes using the JR Yokosuka Line. Kenchoji Temple is then a 20 minute walk. You can also take a short bus ride from Kamakura station. Kenchoji Temple is very close to many of the other Zen temples in the area, making it an ideal and convenient spot during your trip.

Kenchoji Temple is very special in that it is the oldest Zen training monastery in all of Japan, and it is the head temple of the Rinzai Zen sect’s Kenchoji school. The temple was founded in 1253 by a man called Hojo Tokiyori. He was a powerful member of the Kamakura Shogunate family. Kenchoji ranks number one out of five of the Great Zen Temples in Kamakura. Kenchoji offers Zen meditation sessions open to the public providing a unique opportunity for visitors.

kenchoji Temple has vast grounds which are home to a number of notable and culturally significant features. Many of these features are designated Important Cultural Properties. Some of these include the Sanmon Gate, a two story gate symbolising the purification of a person’s mind as they enter the temple. It dates back to 1754 and provides a very grand entrance for visitors as they arrive. There is the Butsuden Buddha Hall which houses the statue of Jizo Bodhisattva who protects travellers and children, and is a fantastic example of Zen architecture. Visitors can also visit the Hatto Dharma Hall, which is the largest wooden temple structure in all of Eastern Japan. It houses a statue of Kannon the Goddess of Mercy and Compassion.

Kenchoji’s Hojo garden is a beautifully tranquil Zen garden which features seasonal flowers, trees and a pond. The garden was designed by a renowned Monk and visitors can enjoy a peaceful atmosphere. Located on top of a wooded hill is Hansobo Shrine. This is a shrine dedicated to the protection of Kenchoji. From up on the hill, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Sagami Bay, Kamakura, and on clear days Mount Fuji!
