Kamakura : Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine
Situated in Kanagawa prefecture, just 100 minutes out of Tokyo, is Kamakura. To reach Kamakura from Tokyo, take a train from Shinjuku station to Fujisawa station, and then catch the local ’Enoden’ train to Kamakura station. Tsurugaoka Hachimangu shrine was founded in its current location in 1191 but its origin goes as far back as 1063! The shrine is located in the very heart of Kamakura, and was therefore an important religious and cultural centre of the city, especially during the Medieval period in Japan.
Hachimangu Shrine is a Shinto Shrine, and is marked by a large red Torii gate as you enter the complex. However, throughout history it has been used as both a Shinto shrine and Buddhist temple and is considered one of the important cultural properties of Japan. As you enter, you will be greeted by the picturesque grounds, arched bridges and surrounding ponds. Walk down the long central path to see a great view of Hachimangu from afar. The shrine is very popular with both tourists and locals, where many traditional ceremonies and weddings are held. Hachimangu is named after Hachiman, a god in Shinto known for their power in war and archery. Therefore, the Kamakura Shogunate and Samurai of the time enshrined the God here to protect their territory.
The shrine complex is quite large as it also includes a tea house, cafe, two museums and stunning gardens and ponds to explore. On the path leading up to the main shrine, street food vendors often line the path selling delicious treats such as fruits, cakes and grilled skewers. Visitors can easily spend 1 hour to 2 hours here exploring and learning all about the shrine and Kamakura’s history. A fun activity that can be enjoyed here is feeding the resident Koi Carp in the shrine’s ponds. Visitors can purchase Koi food from the on site cafe for 100 yen a bag, and head to the outdoor sitting area to feed them! Warning, they are always very hungry! Throughout the year, the shrine holds various events and festivals, so be sure to check their official website for their schedule to see if you can see one during your Kamakura trip!
