Kegon Falls
Nikko is full of amazing nature and attractions, and one of the top places to go is to see Kegon Falls! Kegon Falls is one of many waterfalls found in Nikko, but it is the most famous in the area. The source of this spectacular waterfall is Lake Chuzenji, and it cascades from a height of 97 meters. Kegon Falls is the only exit point for the lake.
This waterfall is so special and admired, that is it actually considered one of the top three waterfalls in all of Japan, much like nearby Shinkyō Bridge which is also ranked in the top three bridges in all of Japan! There is a free observatory that is easily accessible on foot, but visitors wanting a better view they can pay a small fee to access an observatory that sits at the bottom of the waterfall for spectacular up close views! Alongside Kegon Falls, visitors can also visit Nikko’s other famous waterfall, Ryuzu Falls! If you want to have a different view of Kegon Falls, we recommend visiting Akechidaira Ropeway where you can see panoramic views of both Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji together!
What makes Kegon Falls is so special, is how the surrounding landscape changes with the seasons. Of course, Nikko is most famous in the Autumn when the leaves all change to vivid colours of reds, golds, and oranges. Witnessing this alongside Kegon Falls makes for an unforgettable experience. However, in Spring and Summer visitors can also enjoy the lush greenery of the mountains, and in Winter Kegon Falls freezes!
To reach Kegon Falls from either Tobu Nikko station or JR Nikko station, it will take approximately 40 minutes using the sightseeing bus depending on how busy traffic is. Make sure to use the buses bound for Chuzenji Onsen, and get off at the final bus stop.
