Situated in the heart of Tokyo in the cosy and hidden neighbourhood of Kiyosumi, Kiyosumi Gardens is an historic and beautiful Edo period garden. Starting out as the residence of a wealthy merchant, the land was later developed into a traditional Japanese garden by Iwasaki Yatarō, the founder of the famous company Mitsubishi in 1878.
Tokyo-Kiyosumi

The garden is one of Tokyo’s best gardens to visit, especially if you enjoy traditional Japanese features and want to visit a lesser known but equally stunning garden in the city. The garden is designed in the ‘Kaiyū-shiki’ style which means a strolling garden. It was and still is intended for leisurely walks whilst enjoying scenic views.

The garden is most famous for its picturesque stepping stones and rocks, which are beautifully arranged and make for a stand out feature. Some of the stones are rare as they were collected from across Japan by the Iwasaki family. The garden is also famous for its central pond and resident wildlife. In the heart of the garden is a large pond filled with Koi fish, turtles, and Suppon. There are also Herons that regularly rest and feed here.

Despite the devastation that the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake caused, Kiyosumi Gardens remained relevantly intact and served as an important evacuation site. Since 1932, the Iwasaki family and Mitsubishi donated the garden to Tokyo and it has been open to the public ever since. You can enter for a small fee of 300 yen, and with the changing seasons enjoy the changing scenery throughout the year. The garden is most famous for its stunning Cherry Blossoms in Spring and Autumn leaves. For those wanting to explore more in the Kiyosumi area, the museum is just around the corner from the Fukagawa Edo Museum, making these two easy back to back activities to enjoy. Kiyosumi is also home to many great cafes, so why not grab a coffee and a bite to eat as well!
