The garden’s design cleverly incorporates the remnants of walls and passageways from 16th-century buildings, using these historical features to divide the gardens. Water elements, including a central koi pond with a waterfall, bamboo groves, and carefully pruned pines, enhance the tranquil atmosphere. The layout of Kokoen reflects the changing seasons of Japan, with each season bringing its own unique beauty to the gardens. The most striking display occurs in autumn (October to November), when the garden is transformed by the vibrant colors of the autumn leaves.
Open daily from 09:00 to 17:00 (or until 18:00 from mid-April until the end of August), last admission is 30 minutes prior to closing – noting that the garden is closed for two days over Dec.29-30. Admission is 310 yen or you can purchase a joint garden and castle admission ticket for 1050 yen. The garden is located next to the castle.
