Meiji Jingu Shrine

Meiji Jingu Shrine

One of Tokyo’s most famous and beautiful shrines located in the heart of the popular Shibuya ward. The shrine is dedicated to the Emperor and Empress Meiji. Following on from the Emperor’s death in 1912, the government commenced the construction of the shrine complex to commemorate them both.

The shrine complex has a minimal design, and is constructed from Japanese Cypress and copper. Visitors can enjoy a beautiful walk through the 170 acre forest that runs up to the main shrine. it is a very popular place for traditional Shinto weddings to take place, so if you’re lucky you may see a ceremony during your visit. On your approach to the main shrine, you will see the famous Sake and Wine barrels gifted to the Emperor from dignitaries across Japan and around the world.

Visitors can also enjoy a museum dedicated to the treasures of the Emperor and Empress. Designed by famous Japanese Architect Kengo Kuma, the museum building blends seamlessly with the Shrine Complex’s minimal design. Entrance to the museum is 900 yen – 1000 yen, and it is closed on Thursdays.

The shrine complex also has a cafe and souvenir shop where you can rest and enjoy traditional Matcha and Wagashi, as well as a wide variety of refreshments. The souvenir shop sells a great selection of traditional goods that make perfect souvenirs. After exploring the Shrine complex, visitors can take a short 10 minute walk to reach the pop culture hive of Harajuku! We recommend doing both together during your Tokyo trip!
