Naritasan Shinshoji Temple

Naritasan Shinshoji Temple

Situated in Chiba prefecture, and approximately 75 minutes to 110 minutes from Tokyo is Narita. To reach Narita from Tokyo, take a train from Shinjuku station for 75 minutes using the Narita Express Line or a combination of JR lines such as the Chuo Line, Yamanote Line and Joban Line. If like many people, you’re staying in Narita before or after a flight from nearby Narita Airport, the temple is only a 15 minute walk from Narita train station.

The beautiful and historic Naritasan Temple is just a short walk from the station. It is a vast complex and home to one of Narita’s oldest and most significant Buddhist temples. Established in the year 940 CE, it became a popular pilgrimage site and is now one of the most visited temples in Japan. The complex is made up of stunning pagodas, worship halls, a serene park, Calligraphy museum and Shakado treasure hall. You should leave yourself at least 60 minutes to enjoy the temple without rushing.

The temple was built and founded by a monk called Kanchō Daisōjō in honour of the Buddhist Deity Fudō Myōō, the King of Wisdom. Visitors can see the statue of Fudō Myōō which is believed to have powers that many have respected and worshipped for Centuries. The complex is made up of two amazing pagodas – the three storied pagoda built in 1712 and the Great Peace Pagoda built in 1984, the main worship hall rebuilt in 1968, as well as many other smaller structures. The gardens are expansive, with a pond and forested area visitors can enjoy walking through.

Narita Temple is known for its religious practices and festivals. Most important of these is the Goma Fire Rituals. This is where Monks chant sutras as they burn wooden tablets to give blessings. These rituals are popular with those praying for safety, good fortune and prosperity. You can take part in this ritual by buying a wooden tablet and writing your own wishes down. In February there is the Setsubun Festival and in Julu there is the Narita Gion Festival. If you happen to be visiting Narita during either of these festivals, it will be a great way to immerse yourself in local culture and tradition. Check event websites for the dates to plan your visit.
