The castle has suffered much damage throughout the centuries, and the original castle structure was unfortunately destroyed during the Meiji period and restoration of 1868 - 1912. The current castle and tower structure you can see today is a remarkable reconstruction dating back to the 1960’s where highly skilled craftsmen, architects and historians pieced together the castle using historical records for accuracy. The castle is made up of the main tower, many gates and turrets, and the beautiful moat and walls that surround the castle grounds. As a result of its historical importance and impressive reconstruction, the castle is listed as an Important Cultural Property in Japan.
Throughout the changing of the seasons on the Castle’s grounds visitors can enjoy seeing Cherry Blossoms in Spring, and colourful leaves in the Autumn. The castle has impressive and informative exhibits inside of the main castle tower which cover the entire history of the site. On certain falls, special and temporary exhibits are held giving visitors an opportunity to learn something new! At the very top of the Castle tower, visitors are allowed to go outside to see the amazing panoramic views that the castle provides! You can enjoy seeing all of Odawara, surrounding Kanagawa and even Tokyo on clear days from the castle! As well as the Castle, the grounds are also home to a great Samurai Museum where you can try on armour and other period costumes, and a Ninja experience perfect for families! It is also worth noting that during certain times of the year, special events and experiences are held on the castle grounds, so it is worth checking the Castle’s official website in case any events are being held during your planned visit!
