Sensoji Temple and Nakamise Dori

Located in Asakusa, it is probably one of the most popular areas to visit on a trip to Tokyo. Sensoji Temple is the oldest temple in Tokyo, dating back to 645 AD. It is one of the most popular religious sites in the world with over 30 million visitors annually, and for good reason. The temple’s beautiful gates, pagoda and treasures make it a must visit on your Tokyo trip!

The complex is actually made up of both Sensoji temple which is a Buddhist temple, and to the right of the temple is Asakusa Shrine, a Shinto shrine dedicated to the three founders of Sensoji temple. Please make sure to visit both during your visit to full appreciate the beauty and history of Asakusa. Why not try getting your fortune or ’Omakuji’ during your visit to the temple! Visitors must give a small donation of 200 yen to receive a fortune. The custom is Japan is if you receive a bad fortune, to tie it at the temple and leave your bad luck behind you.

Sensoji Temple opens from 6am to 5pm, so if you’re an early riser it is a perfect activity! We highly recommend visiting in the morning as by the afternoon the complex becomes very busy. The temple and shrine are both free to enter.

Laying just in front of the beautiful temple complex is Nakamise Dori, a 250 metre long shopping street lined with over 90 shops selling local crafts, souvenirs and delicious street food. Founded in the 18th Century, the street is an important part of Asakusa and the culture of the area. Combining both Senso-ji temple and Nakamise Dori makes for a fun and interesting few hours which we highly recommend. Shops open from 8am and 10am, and most close by 7pm.
