Shibuya

Probably one of the most famous areas in all of Tokyo, Shibuya is home to many famous and popular attractions. Visitors to Shibuya can easily spend 1 day exploring all that Shibuya has to offer such as famous landmarks, observatories, parks, shops and restaurants!

Shibuya

One of the most popular landmarks is ’Shibuya Crossing’ or ’Shibuya Scramble’. You may think this is just a regular crossing, but it is in fact the world’s busiest crossing! it is estimated that over 2.4 million people cross it every day! For many, Shibuya Crossing symbolises what Tokyo is all about. As you walk across, you will feel like you’re the main character in a movie as you are surrounded by skyscrapers, neon lights and billboards.

There are many great alternatives to viewing the crossing from afar if you’re wanting to escape the crowds! Shibuya station, surrounding department stores such and Shibuya Hikarie, and the Starbucks located just opposite the station and crossing being some of the best viewpoints to people watch and enjoy the atmosphere. The best part is that many of these viewpoints are completely free, with the exception of Starbucks where you will have to purchase a drink or item to be able to sit inside the cafe.

Located just opposite the crossing is the famous monument of Hachiko. A dog beloved by the Japanese people for his love and dedication to his owner long after his owner passed away. After his owner’s death, Hachiko would continue to wait for his owner at Shibuya station until his own death. Local people would feed and play with Hachiko, and he became popular in the community. Now, people come to Shibuya from all over the country and world to pay their respects to Hachiko. You can have your photo taken with his monument, but be prepared to que.

Visitors to Shibuya can also enjoy many other nearby attractions. Miyashita Park is an urban complex with modern shops, restaurants and roof terrace where you can grab a coffee or beer. Shibuya 109 is a very popular and famous department store with 10 floors full of fashion and accessory stores. Geared towards the younger generations, but still worth a browse to see the street fashions popular in Tokyo. Shibuya Sky is the most modern and newest addition to the observatories in Tokyo. After opening in 2019, Shibuya Sky has rocketed in popularity with its glass observation decks and bar where you can sit and enjoy panoramic views of Tokyo in luxury!
