Shinjuku Gyoen Garden

One of the most famous and historically significant gardens in Tokyo, Shinjuku Gyoen is a must visit if you want to feel close to nature during your trip to Tokyo. You will quickly forgot you are in the centre of the world’s most populated city once you enter the tranquil and green space.

The land was gifted to a local Samurai family, the Naito family by the Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1590 where it was enjoyed by the family for a few centuries as their residence and garden. It was eventually taken under the ownership of the imperial household where the garden was used for botanical studies and an agriculture centre. Over the years, the garden underwent a transformation which saw a blend of styles being used such as Japanese, French and English. You can enjoy the different designs today.

The garden does have a tea house and cafes where you enjoy matcha and wagashi while looking out at the scenery. If you go on the weekends, be prepared to que as the cafes and teahouses get very busy. You can also enjoy savoury foods and snacks here such as grilled rice balls (Onigiri).

The greenhouse is a popular spot to see some exotic plants and flowers. In spring you can enjoy the beautiful Cherry Blossom trees. It is important to note that if you’re wanting to visit during the Spring and Cherry Blossom season, that there is a special ticketing system in place for the park. You will need to wait in line to gain entry as it gets very busy during this time, especially on weekends.
