Shinjuku Historical Museum
If you want to learn all about Shinjuku and its history before it became the neon lit entertainment hub we know today, then paying a visit to the Shinjuku Historical Museum is a great place to visit on your trip to Tokyo!
Opened in 1989, the museum retraces the history of Shinjuku since the Palaeolithic period, more than 30,000 years ago. It explains the birth of Shinjuku which took its name in 1698. The museum is divided into 5 main parts ; the archaeology of Shinjuku, Medieval Shinjuku, Shinjuku during the Edo and Meiji periods, Shinjuku and modern literature and Shinjuku during the Showa period.
The museum is located approximately 20 minutes on foot from Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. Therefore it makes for a great activity to do before or after visiting the gardens. For those wanting to only visit the museum, you can reach it in five minutes from Yotsuya Sanchome station on foot. The museum stands out as a highlight for its interactive and engaging to scale replicas of traditional Japanese houses, warehouses and a train carriage. This makes the museum a perfect activity for families, children and adults alike!
