Shinsekai
Shinsekai, or “New World,” is one of Osaka’s most unique neighborhoods, blending nostalgic charm with modern energy. Developed in 1912 as a bold vision of the future, Shinsekai was modeled after Western cities. The northern part drew inspiration from Paris, including its centerpiece, the Tsutenkaku Tower, while the southern section reflected the excitement of New York’s Coney Island. Tsutenkaku, which translates to “Tower Reaching Heaven,” became the pride of Osaka as a symbol of innovation and ambition.
In its early days, Shinsekai was a bustling entertainment hub. The area featured an amusement park, cinemas, and a lively atmosphere. However, it fell into decline after World War II and developed a reputation as a rough neighborhood. Over time, Shinsekai has reemerged as a beloved destination, offering visitors a glimpse into Osaka’s Showa-era culture while preserving its gritty authenticity.
Today, Shinsekai is a vibrant mix of retro appeal and culinary adventure. The iconic Tsutenkaku Tower, rebuilt in 1956 after a fire, stands as a beacon of Osaka pride. Visitors can ascend the tower for panoramic views of the city and see the beloved statue of Billiken, the “God of Things As They Ought to Be,” which locals and tourists rub for good luck.
Shinsekai is also synonymous with kushikatsu, a beloved Osaka specialty. These deep-fried skewers of meat, seafood, and vegetables are served with dipping sauce (but remember: no double-dipping!). Restaurants like Daruma are especially popular, making the area a foodie’s paradise.
Whether it’s exploring the retro arcades, indulging in kushikatsu, or taking in the views from Tsutenkaku, Shinsekai offers a distinct slice of Osaka’s culture. While our tours don’t currently visit this area, we’d love to introduce you to other highlights of Osaka, like the historic Shitennoji Temple, the vibrant Dotonbori district, and more! Shinsekai is perfect for an independent visit to experience the nostalgic heart of this dynamic city.
