Snowshoe in Togakushi
Lying within the boundary of Nagano City and accessible using local buses from Nagano Station, Togakushi is an ideal area to enjoy snowshoe-walking during winter. The region is best-known for its Shinto shrines and forest trails, many of which can still be enjoyed from December to March by renting snowshoes. The Togakushi Tourist Information Center is located across for the Chusha (Middle Shrine) and at the top of the village. Snowshoes can be rented and returned to the office, allowing you to then head-off along the many walking trails in the area.
Highlights include walking toward the Okusha (Upper Shrine) and through the Zuishinmon and giant cedar avenue along with the longer circuit to and from Kagami-ike. Togakushi Campground is another fantastic place to snowshoe. On fine winter days, the plateau of the campground affords easy walking and fantastic views of Mount Togakushi or if you’re feeling up to an uphill walk, you could venture all the way up to Togakushi Ski Resort.
When undertaking snowshoeing, it’s important to know that the route you are choosing is suitable for your level of experience and fitness, so best to discuss it with the staff at the Tourist Information Center. Local guides are available who can guide you along some beautiful trails and through the forest, an activity which is simple to master and fun for guests of all ages.
