Situated in the heart of Tokyo in the cosy neighbourhood of Yotsuya, Suga Shrine is a historic and beautiful Shinto Shrine now made popular due to it being the real life location of the famous red stairs from the anime film ‘Your Name’.

The shrine dates back to the Edo period, and was founded in 1634. It is dedicated to the important deities of Susanoo-no-Mikoto and Kushinadahime-no-Mikoto who are husband and wife, and believed to be deities associated with protection from disasters and good fortune. The shrine sees many visitors coming to pray for romantic and professional success, as well as good fortune. The shrine is small, but has beautiful architecture and features. The shrine even hosts an annual festival called the Suga Matsuri in early June where a lively procession passes through the streets of Yotsuya!

However, Suga shrine has gained popularity in recent years due to the film ‘Your Name’ or ‘Kimi no Na Wa’, which features the red stairs leading up to the shrine in the emotional final scene. Now, the shrine is internationally recognised, and has since become part of a popular ‘Your Name’ pilgrimage for fans to visit and recreate the famous scene. You will see many like minded fans waiting to snap a photo on the stairs! Suga shrine has embraced this with arms wide open, and now sells small ‘Your Name’ themed goods such as lucky charms, wooden plaques and bookmarks!

The shrine and stairs are easily accessible from Yotsuya station, where it is a short walk making it an easy stop for both anime fans and history enthusiasts!
