TeamLab Borderless and TeamLab Planets
TeamLab has quickly become a major attraction in the art world in Tokyo. Offering one of a kind digital art experiences that are fun and engaging, it is easy to see why they have gained such popularity with both residents and tourists in Tokyo. TeamLab have expanded over the years, and now offer to main attractions located in different parts of Tokyo – TeamLab Borderless and TeamLab Planets. We highly recommend booking both as far in advance as you can as they are both extremely popular, and if you can avoid going on weekends it will be a lot quieter for you.
Opened in June 2018, TeamLab Borderless is an expansive, interactive art space in which visitors move through an immersive series of digital exhibition spaces. Designed by digital artists at Mori Art Museum (MAM), the unique exhibition combines art with digital science in using more than 500 computers and 470 projectors to produce digital displays and illuminated installations. As you move between rooms, digital images float and move across surfaces, ever-changing and immersing the viewer in a fantastical realm of clouds of butterflies, animal herds made of flowers, shimmering waterfalls and a seemingly endless and captivating array of images.
Spread across 10,000m², there is no set course to follow with rooms changing their appearance as you wander and interacting with your movement – surely a glimpse of the future and things to come. Hugely popular, expect crowds every day of the week. TeamLab Borderless was relocated in 2022 from Odaiba to the brand new and modern complex of Toranomon- Azubudai, in Minato.
TeamLab Planets is the newest addition. Opened in 2018, the new experience is located in Toyosu. It was originally planned as a temporary exhibition but it was decided to keep it open for a longer period due to its popularity. The exhibition is currently scheduled to be open until the end of 2027.
Like TeamLab Borderless, Planets is an equally immersive and interactive digital art exhibition. It offers a multi sensory experience where you walk barefoot through certain rooms during the exhibit. It is important to note that part of the experience involves walking through water, we bare this in mind when dressing before you go. You will have to either roll up your trousers or hold up your dress if you’re not wearing shorts or shorter hemlines.
