Tokyo Disneyland and Disneysea
No visit to Tokyo would be complete without a visit to Tokyo Disneyland or Tokyo Disneysea. Both of the parks are located next to each other in the Tokyo Bay area. To reach either park, visitors can get the train from major stations such as Shinjuku, Tokyo and Shibuya to Maihama station. The journey from both Shibuya and Shinjuku takes approximately 45 – 50 minutes, but from Tokyo station it only takes 23 minutes. From Maihama station, both parks are a short walk on foot.
We highly recommend booking your Disneyland or Disneysea tickets in advance, as some days can sell out and be very popular. The parks release tickets 3 months in advance. Our best tips for purchasing tickets is to either book on ’Klook’ or download the ’Tokyo Disney Resort’ app. You can also buy your tickets at Convenience stores such as 7/11 in Tokyo. Prices for tickets vary, with tickets starting from 8,900 yen to 10,900 yen.
Tokyo Disneyland offers everything you’d expect, and has similarities to the other Disneyland parks globally, with bigger rides and smaller rides to suit all ages. Big name attractions such as ’The Haunted Mansion’, ’Splash Mountain’ and ‘Its a Small World’ can all be found here. However, the park also has some newer attractions which have become extremely popular since their opening. One of the most popular rides is now the ’Beauty and the Beast’ ride. Offering the best in animatronics and special effects, this ride alone is worth the trip to the park!
Disneyland is certainly more family friendly, and no alcohol is permitted to be drunk on the park premises. There are plenty of snack vendors, cafes and restaurants which can be found throughout the park. Reservations can be made, and wait times for non-reservations vary. So we highly recommend planning your itinerary ahead of time and booking where you can.
Tokyo Disneysea is an original concept only found in Japan, so if only have time to do one of the parks, Disneysea may be the best option. The park is great for all ages, but older visitors may find the park appealing as it offers some rides and attractions that are more adrenaline fuelled such as ’Tower of Terror’, ‘Indiana Jones Adventure’ and ’Raging Spirits’, but also more visually pleasing attractions for an older audience. For example, each part of the park is themed off somewhere in the world such as the ’American Waterfront’, ’Arabian Coast’ and even the ’Mediterranean Harbour’. Venturing through each of these areas guests will come across rides and food matching the theme. Disneysea also sells and allows the consumption of alcohol, so those who drink can enjoy one or two Disneysea original cocktails!
2024 welcomed a brand new addition to Disneysea, the ’Fantasy Springs’ area! This area comprises of new rides, restaurants, decor and souvenirs based off Frozen, Peter Pan and Rapunzel. Once again, the animatronics and robotics are the best and will be sure to wow you! This new attraction is very popular, so if you are interested in visiting Disneysea in the near future, be prepared for this.
As we mentioned above, it is definitely worth downloading the ’Tokyo Disney Resort’ app before your visit. The app is a one stop shop for all the information you need to make your trip as smooth as possible. The in app features include digital tickets, an interactive map of the parks with all current wait times, a list of all restaurants which you can make reservations for, as well as special events and passes to apply for which give you shorter wait times for rides, and access to special shows and parades.
Finally, both parks offer amazing seasonal events for Halloween, Christmas and New Year. Both parks are decorated with spectacular trees, lights and props. The shops and restaurants sell limited addition souvenirs and foods, and some rides have seasonal events to make your experience extra special. The Haunted Mansion has a collaboration with the ’Nightmare Before Christmas’ for Halloween and Christmas. So if you’re a fan of the seasons, we recommend visiting during these times.
