Toyama Bay Seafood
Nestled between the Tateyama Mountains and Toyama Bay, Toyama City is one of the best places in Japan to enjoy freshly-caught seafood. Most famous for its ‘Toyama Bay Sushi’, the fishing waters off the north coast are some of the most abundant catchments anywhere in Japan. Open daily from 09:00 to 17:00, Shinminato Kito Kito Market is one of the best places to enjoy the day’s catch. One of several such markets on the coast, the market is by no means the only place to enjoy seafood in Toyama but it’s a great place to start!
The topography of Toyama Bay creates a natural fish tank, as the sea floor drops away sharply, creating a submerged canyon which forms a natural boundary for sea life. Nutrients wash down from the North Japan Alps creating bountiful fishing grounds which feed the nearby coastal markets. Many catchments are only 20-minutes by boat from the coast, meaning that seafood available at the coastal markets along with the restaurants and vendors in Toyama City is exceedingly fresh. When in Toyama, trying the seafood is something of a must-do.
