Tsukiji Outer Market
Tokyo’s most famous market, Tsukiji Outer Market is a foodie paradise for those who want to sample the best and freshest produce available! Opened in 1935, the market has a long history with Tokyo and local people who still come here to enjoy the produce on offer. Open from 5am to 2pm, it’s a great first stop to have breakfast or lunch. Just a 3 minute walk from Tsukiji station, it is conveniently located for visitors and well sign posted.
The market has a bustling and lively atmosphere which adds to the experience! You can see stall owners busily preparing food, slicing and dicing fresh fish for sashimi and grilling mouthwatering Wagyu beef. Trying fish and seafood is a must here, but we highly recommend trying fatty tuna or salmon! We also recommend trying the wagyu beef, tamagoyaki and the fresh fruit.
There is even a modern food court in the middle of the older market stalls where you can sit down and have a meal in a restaurant if standing and eating is not appealing to you. Don’t forget to walk through the indoor section of the market where you can see the fish and seafood that was freshly caught that same morning on display. You will be in awe at the variety in front of you, especially the large Tuna!
There is even a small shrine at Tsukiji you can visit which brings good fortune and prosperity to the business owners and market stall owners who pray there. We highly recommend paying a visit in between eating delicious food!
Remember that there is no haggling culture at Tsukiji market. The price displaying is the price you pay, so don’t try and get a bargain. It is also worth noting that some stalls owners take cards, but many still only accept cash. So make sure to bring enough with you!
